lifestyle differences after moving out
tea drinking: up 800% i don’t know why i drink so much more tea when i’m not living with my parents, but i become a serial tea drinker. MSNBC watching: down 300% and the rest of TV watching for that matter. which is generally a good thing, but i do like watching the news. however this means dad will have to find someone else to complain about republicans to. Where the cornbread at
It’s right here in #2) http://www.ibtimes.com/articles/228973/20111011/herman-cain-quotes-pokemon-republican-presidential-candidate-debate.htm I appreciate that someone else likes cornbread, but unfortunately, that looks like the extent of his sanity.

Me vs Robot
User: Hi cleverbot. Cleverbot: What’s up? User: I work in a genetics lab. Do you know anything about genetics? Cleverbot: I know what it is. User: Does it interest you? Cleverbot: Not really. User: Why not? Cleverbot: It keeps me busy, we get a lot of orders of paint, it distracts me. User: That didn’t make any sense. Cleverbot: It does make sense to a human. User: How do you know...

Today in Lab
Today in lab I was bored. I found a spectacular fungus growing on one of the amp/tet plates… it had somehow decided to develop resistance to ampicillin AND tetracycline. I was impressed. So I decided to keep it as a pet. I put it on my lab bench. His name is Reinhärd.

Constants
Dear Internet, Today I have successed at deriving the Deen Butter Constant for Frosting. Clarification: when you have a recipe by Paula Deen that involves frosting, and it says to add X amount of butter, you add 0.5 the amount of X. I did this for my pumpkin bars and the cream cheese frosting was perfect.  The constant of 0.5 works only for frosting. I would guess that for the cake itself one...

too yutilitarian
http://www.bls.gov/tus/charts/ this site is interesting–it’s a bunch of graphs from the bureau of labor statistics about how americans spend their time. i’ve always wondered about how we use our time.  they could have broken down “leisure and sports time” more. The subcategories seem pretty vague. though i have confirmed what i thought all along. TV is by far our national...

I'm future-posting
Tumblr apparently has a feature where you can control when you publish your blogs. Since I apparently have nothing better to do with my time, I’ve decided to check it out right now. I sent myself three messages: one for tomorrow (which is technically in one minute), one for next month, and one for today’s date, 2059.  This kind of reminds me of that one Radiolab episode where that one...

This changes all the time, but Local Natives have it now with Wide Eyes. This song also means that the best album i’ve heard is about to follow. 2. Because I’m considering Rebecca Black’s “Friday” as more of a “noise...

the bro/hipster dichotomy: does it exist?
here’s something i’ve devoted an unreasonably large amount of time to think about. is there a necessary dichotomy to be drawn between bros and hipsters? or are they independent social categories? i used to assume they were opposite ends of some social-category spectrum, but upon further review, I see no evidence to support this. maybe they’re even positively correlated. of...

It's one of those days
… where i feel like America’s gone to hell again. OH WAIT that’s every day. With this Libya fiasco, I’d choose not to vote for Obama again if it were not for the other options. Apparently the leading option thinks that America will also go to hell soon, though dominated by secular athiest radical islamists (????????????????????????????). seriously.

atheist christmas
i had a pretty uneventful christmas. mostly it was because we didn’t go to chicago, and it was just the four of us plus grandma goldie (and turbo and seefa, if you count cats). but i was thinking about how i used to believe, like most christians do, that the true meaning of christmas is the birth of jesus. i mean, that’s why the holiday was founded in the first place. then capitalism...

Da Vidja-Games
Two-thirds of my roommates keep playing their DAMN VIDJAGAMES all the time. Matt played from 10-1 today, according to Trent, who is my sane roommate. I got back from class at 4, and he was playing with Jeremy until around 8. After an hour or two of not playing vidjagames, he was back at it and STILL PLAYING NOW. That is a total of 9+ HOURS TODAY!! Don’t know about Jeremy, who might be at his...

a hypothetical conversation
This kept my mind entertained at work today. It’s only funny if you know who these people are and can imagine actually hearing the conversation for itself (especially Mr. Lyman’s voice, which always sounds enthusiastic, boisterous, and fun).  Mr. Lyman: Hi Samuel! How are you today? Samuel Huang: not bad, how are you? ML: I’m having a shitty day! a VERY shitty day! (knocks...

I used to feed people clay.
My geography/energy resources professor was talking about oil shales today, and he was saying how shale is made of compacted clay.  Being the offhand kind of guy he is, he told us that there’s essentially clay in soft serve ice cream. I looked it up later, and i think the mineral he was talking about is calcium sulfate, or plaster of paris. yep, that’s in your dairy queen. Since I...

Stereotypes
One thing I like to do is make fun of conservative people, along with Nate. It’s great fun. Their ignorance about world issues, ignorance about national issues, ignorance about anything beyond the realms of pop culture and aphorisms, their habits, the ways they talk, and how one might name his son “Pabst” and enter a local Chinese restaurant only to order a “Kung-Fu Big...

dream
Last night i had a dream where i was rocking out in my backyard to “Cannibal Resource” by the Dirty Projectors with some friends from SFS. I don’t remember who was there exactly, but I was playing the drums. It was awesome, and so I woke up and listened to Bitte Orca this morning.  I think I’m beginning to see its genius.

Self Sufficiency
http://www.newyorker.com/archive/2005/11/28/051128ta_talk_surowiecki An especially interesting point this article makes is that because Americans work more hours, they pay other people to do many things that they could do themselves, but don’t want to (eating more at restaurants instead of cooking dinner, dropping the kids off at daycare, etc). The result is that there are more...

Critique of objectivism:
First some quotes: Ayn Rand: “Whatever you choose to consider, be it an object, an attribute or an action, the law of identity remains the same. A leaf cannot be a stone at the same time, it cannot be all red and all green at the same time, it cannot freeze and burn at the same time. A is A. Or, if you wish it stated in simpler language: You cannot have your cake and eat it, too.” ...

You know what I miss.
Lately I’ve been thinking about some of the not-so-obvious things I miss from the island, and here are a few: Waking up at 5:55 in the morning and going out to run. I’d have a shirt on so that none of the islanders would get “offended” by my bare chest. This was part of the guise of complying with the staff rules: Ok Jessee, I’ll be sure to wear this shirt so I...
